The SmokinSS Monte Carlo build was part of the Metal Craft SkillCenter performance vehicle-training program. The Crossville, Tennessee SkillCenter uses a build team concept where student technicians learn and utilize skill sets to build a performance vehicle. As an added twist the SmokinSS build was a multi-month feature in Buckaroo Communications Chevy Rumble magazine. The build started in November 2007, with over 60 product sponsors donating parts or services to the build. 5 student technicians logged over 3000 man-hours in the training labs designing, machining, fabricating, assembling, and refinishing the SmokinSS Monte Carlo build.Total curb weight: 3,100 pounds. The Design Chevy Rumble editor, Tommy Lee created a storyboard with the concept of building a car capable of handling a multitude of different performance challenges. On his list of challenges was a flying mile style car, that was capable of doing pro touring style challenges, autocross, road course, drag strip, along with cross country runs.Tommy wanted a donor car that could be found in a junkyard. The 86’ Monte Carlo was chosen for the build based on the Metal Craft SkillCenter’s history in Winston Cup type cars. Lead build team instructor Mark Davis had logged over 100 hours in the wind tunnel with that generation of Monte Carlo along with six seasons of track time with the SS fascia version of the car. Our objective was to concentrate on the aero package of the car, keep it light, make it adjustable, and build a high output engine with versatile drivability. The Body Based on track testing and wind tunnel data from the late eighties and without any NASCAR rules the SmokinSS took advantage of all documented aero tricks. The nose was moved forward 2 inches, the windshield angle increased from 27 degrees to 32 degrees, the center nose height was set at 26 ½ at ride height, the roof was chopped 2 inches, the stock flat hood was replaced with 2 inch cowl hood. The rear window was replaced with a molded aero coupe style back glass. The SS deck lid was custom built in aluminum and replaced the stock unit with a 30 degree 6 inch gurney lipped spoiler set at 39 inches at spoiler top. The stock rear cover was widened 4 inches to create a hard line from extension top to lower bottom edge. The sides where slab sided and tapered from 2 inches inside the front tire to 1 inch outside the rear tire. One-piece front fenders and rear quarters were custom fabricated to meet the new aero boundaries. Custom skirting was set at 3 ½ inches on the nose and rockers. The Chassis The chassis was based on a front steer GM Winston Cup format, 110” wheelbase, 60” tread width. The tubular chassis and roll cage utilized designs used in racing arenas where adjustability and the ability to make changes on the fly are key to performance. The front tubular spindles have a 10 degree steering axis, 10 inch overall height with a 2 inch dropped design. In an effort to keep rotating weight down to a minimum speedway engineering aluminum GN hubs, drive plates, rotor plates, along withWilwood lightweight rotorswere added to the build. The rear end housing is a Winters 9-inch Ford aluminum housing with a truck arm suspension. In the front is a tubular sway bar rated at 1100 pounds with aluminum arms. The rear sway bar is designed to connect or disconnect depending on the challenge. All front end alignment perimeters are set up with racing quality slugs so changes can be made in minutes. The chassis-tuning package is centered around the Afco T2 double adjustable Coil-over shocks; adjustments from 3 to 9 on rebound and compression allow you to dial your chassis in just minutes. The front end springs rated at #450 pounds, rears at #350 where calculated based on roll centers, centers of gravity, and component location by the chassis R+D design software. The Engine The engine is a 407 cubic inch SBC. The Smokin SS power plant was based on NASCAR proven perimeters, with new generation EFI technology. The short block was fitted with 44 pound ultralite Scat crank and 6 inch 600 gram H beam Scat rods. The NASCAR style Dished Mahle pistons and lite weight tapered pins completed the rotating assembly. The top end included a set of AFR 210, a Wilson CNC machined Victor intake, with a Retrotek Power Jection III EFI unit. For drivability a 300 Extreme Comp Cam with hydraulic rollers gives a strong power curve from 1800 RPM-5000RPM, with a total HP rating of 605 HP with 586 foot pounds of torque.
